what is going on with this talk radio situation?  is it really true that the federal gov could shut down talk radio with such personages as Limbaugh, Imus, Beck, etc. going down because fed regs will control political talk... does this sound like socialism or communism at it's best?

there is something called a Fairness Doctrine, which requires radio stations to air alternative points of view — a ruse making people leery of airing controversial talk-radio hosts fearing law suits and federal sanctions.

as i understand it, the current talk-radio system allows free speech:  the renewed 'fairness doctrine' will make radio people give 1-minute liberal coverage for every 1-minute conservative:  a costly deal when you think of it... 12 hrs of hearing liberals such as what is going on in Berkeley with the USMarine Corps, and 12 hrs of hearing those supporting the USMarine Corps... ew... ew...

From my understanding, the shows could still function so long as they offered equal time to opposing views. Unfortunately, as shown with the failure of Air America, radio listeners don't listen to nonsense like that and advertisers are wary of putting money into stations with no audiences. It's just another way of letting government control a free enterprise and it flies in the face of letting the market determine the content. This could be the issue that finally wakes people up.

I'm still listening to Air America every day, so not sure how you're defining failure. Rachel Maddow is the best thing on the air waves today. And, I'm liberal, and still think that the fairness doctrine is the biggest load of %$&Q. Free speech is just that.

Just another stupid idea from the govt. If they do air the liberal crap no one will listen to the shows.

Look at the finances of Air America. What a joke.

With regard to the feds passing this crap, they will create a bigger monster than they ever bargained for and here is why.

There exists a radio culture few know or pay attention to called pirate radio. If and when the fed sticks its nose in where it doesn't belong (radio), the citizens will cry out through radio.

For under $1,000 I can (and know how to) construct a radio station that'll kick a signal for 10 miles around. What is more, I can choose my frequency, block out others, and/or wreak havoc with broadcasters. Too, I can choose a frequency that doesn't interfere.

Trust me, I can also build a mobile radio station to broadcast which would be near impossible to detect given the amount of traffic to contend with.

Pirate broadcasters are savvy enough to block out any station they want to at any time. Surely "they" have to know a war of the frequencies they can't win will erupt if they pass this inane law.

DMoriarty, yeah, Rachel Maddow rox. She just gives the facts as they are, FACTs. Keith Olbermann invites her on his show once in awhile too. Air America is far from a failure and Rush Limbaugh is just a big ugly sack of hot air but even idiots like him need to be allowed on the air to make everything fair.

And Moankie82, have you ever looked up the word "Liberal"? Here you go from just a few online dictionaries:

a. Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.
b. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.
c. Of, relating to, or characteristic of liberalism.

1. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs. the total opposite of conservatism.

2. (often initial capital letter) noting or pertaining to a political party advocating measures of progressive political reform.

3. of, pertaining to, based on, or advocating liberalism.

4. favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties. right wingers are mostly against civil liberties.

5. favoring or permitting freedom of action, esp. with respect to matters of personal belief or expression: a liberal policy toward dissident artists and writers.

6. of or pertaining to representational forms of government rather than aristocracies and monarchies. Again, right wing neo-cons are for monarchies. That is why the sheeple 28% that still support Bush love him because he thinks that the Executive branch is the only branch that matters. Who needs the Legislative and Judicial branches anyway? All we need is a king, right?.

7. free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant: a liberal attitude toward foreigners.. You see just the opposite of this on these right wing blogs.

8. open-minded or tolerant, esp. free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc.

9. characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts: a liberal donor.

10. given freely or abundantly; generous: a liberal donation.

11. not strict or rigorous; free; not literal: a liberal interpretation of a rule.

12. of, pertaining to, or based on the liberal arts.

13. of, pertaining to, or befitting a free man.
–noun

14. a person of liberal principles or views, esp. in politics or religion.

15. (often initial capital letter) a member of a liberal party in politics, esp. of the Liberal party in Great Britain.

DMoriary,

You are welcome. You know, I used to be one of those sheeple around 5 years ago. I bashed liberals too. I voted for W in 2000. I was being brainwashed by an old friend of mine. After 5 years of not speaking to him he tried to come back in my life but I won't have anything to do with him. He is a right wing political fanatic. I can barely tolerate these people whom I used to be so much alike. The difference with me though is I knew absolutely nothing about politics; I let everyone else "think" for me. I pulled my head out of my ass and started reading. A LOT. I used to believe the media was full of "liberal rag". My "friend" called it that. I found out it is quite the opposite. What really bothers me is some of these folks on these blogs DO know a lot about politics and they can have an open argument with you but they read all the garbage from Fox News and all these neocon blogs. Go read what TexanInfidel blogs about.

I don't know what you mean by "peeps" curiositync. I'm sure you are just being sarcastic. That's okay though. It is your blog.

Dmoriary, you are being misled now. It's downright hilarious that you would mention Fox news and yet here you are! What a laugh. Moreover, why did you fail to mention that NBC, CNN, ABC, CBS MSNBC and all the rest are liberal bastions of thought/speech? Just wasn't convenient for you, was it?

Curioustync, you feel safe around a lefty? I don't! I want people around me who are not afraid to lift arms against their enemies rather than sitting back, singing a zillion renditions of Kumbaya and allowing the Trojan Horse of Islam to take over. Man up the two of you!

Wow, scotty, feel threatened much? I never mentioned Fox news in any of my comments, that was flipnotic. By the way, who am I being misled by? I'm a big boy, and I can make my own decisions, don't need to be led anywhere. So, I can lump you in with all the "righties" then, like you are lumping me with all the lefties. It's all extremes to you, then, no middle ground? How do you know I don't own several guns and vocally support my right to defend my family and myself? You don't, you just automatically go on the attack because I mention that I like Air American and Rachel Maddow.

Flipnotic,
I too, voted for W in 2000. Worst vote I ever cast. But I've seen the light now about this administration. Now I'm outnumbered in my family, in terms of politcal views, but at least most of them can have meaningful discussions about the current state of affairs instead of plugging their fingers in their ears and shouting "Naayayayaya, I can't hear you...go away evil liberal, go away"

Trust me, the only thing that scares me are the sheep being led to the liberal slaughter. It is soooo easy to see how in the future the Antichrist will deceive hordes. All it takes is a slick tongue and general gift of gab. It doesn't take experience, that's for sure. And don't think I am lumping Obama in as the Antichrist as I am not. These two democratic knuckleheads are merely precursors to the evil that draws high. It is a good thing you keep weapons handy. The day approaches

With regard to Air America there is no middle ground. I don't listen to Rush save for to see what he is up to from time to time. Lord only knows I am bombarded with liberal thought and speech with every news channel and damn near every rag I pick up.

Yeah, lump me in with all the righties. I love it.

And I guess there are no sheep being led to the conservative slaughter?? Anyway, our political views don't mesh, so be it. You see liberal bias everywhere, I see as much conservative bias.
Back to the original purpose of this blog, though...I do strongly disagree with the fairness doctrine. The world of media is a ratings driven monster, and if the liberal side doesn't get the ratings, then they fail, period. No reason for the government to come in and say "equal time for the all sides." Yes, talk radio is dominated by conservative views, but talk radio is not the only media forum in this country. I, for one, hope this does not pass, and I listen to mostly liberal talk radio, but also enjoy listening to the other "side" Like Scott Wilder on the Word 100.7. With the amount of information out there, let the consumer decide where he or she gets their info.

The Fairness Doctrine. Equal time. Correct me if I'm wrong, please. I seem to remember that being ancient history. Is it something they tried to pass some time ago, and failed, and they're trying to pass it again? I must assume it didn't pass, because if it did why mention it now? I do remember hearing talk of it many, many years ago. Somebody look it up, because I don't really care.

Certain members of Congress, such as Kuchinich, Kerry and Feinstein have brought up an interest in reinstating the Fairness Doctrine.
